Black or white seems to be a big trend this season. I have to admit, it does make getting ready easy! I have a wide selection of white t-shirts but I tend more to the black than the white. So, today I worked white in by way of accessories.
No matter what time of year it is, I love scarfs. This skinny silk scarf is absolutely perfect for Summer. It’s light-weight and adds just the right touch to an outfit. On a recent walk to Mad Cap I found this vintage white belt…I could not believe it fit! Recently, I added this white snakeskin clutch to my collection. The silver chain detail around the edges is great. It’s such a cool bag and will get alot of use this Summer. These black and white shoes have been in my closet for years. I feel like they are a classic and I’m sure they have many more years of wear in them.
So the countdown is on! We leave for vacation on Tuesday.
It often surprises people that I travel with only a carry-on. Yep, that’s right…it all goes overhead or it doesn’t go with me. What’s the secret? Layers; neutrals; multi-tasking items and compression sacks.
For my skincare and make-up…samples or travel sizes are key. You can easily find these in most department stores or online. I’ve SaveMart (locally) to be great for the essentials like deodorant; tissues; toothpaste etc (although stock away the sample toothpastes and floss your dentist gives you and then you’re all set with no expense!) I pour my lotions, serum and foundation into smaller travel size jars so I don’t have to carry a full bottle. I’ve been trying to streamline my make-up routine anyway so this trip helped be fine-tune even more. I’ve landed on a flexible eye shadow pack from MAC that is perfect. It’s thin case travels well and the shadows can be used wet or dry so you can get day and night looks from the same mix. I consolidated my blush and bronzer into one product that provides contouring and color…again, from MAC. I’m loving the small, thin case and how nice it applies. I have a duplicate set of brushes and sponges I can only for travel. this way I know I’m not forgetting something. This roll bag holds everything I need perfectly and slips easily into a side pocket in my carry-on.
Clothing…really, one bag you ask. Yes. As you see here the key is neutrals: grey, black and taupe. And, for fun this time I’m adding a navy dress which works with black for a sophisticated touch. A few graphic tees, black and denim jeans and a gold and silver jewelry. I take a large tote as my “personal bag” on the plane—it fits magazines; my iPad; phone; passport and any other essentials I need to have at hand while flying. In my carry-on I throw 1-2 clutches/crossbodys for added interest with my outfits. Since it’s still a little cool, I’ll be taking my black trench coat—classic and goes with everything. My handy scarf that doubles as a leg warmer on the plane and two pairs of black boots will round out my wardrobe. All the clothing slips into a large compression sack, suck out the air and lay it in. Keeps everything protected from random spills and saves a ton of space. I carry one extra compression sack for all the things I buy while traveling too. Done!
I generally don’t wear big sleeves and especially not anything with ruffles. But, this is more of a “wing” style than a ruffle and it feels really pretty when I wear it. The sleeves drape nicely and give a simple black blouse an upgraded look and feel. It would go as well with a skirt as it does with jeans.
To offset the formal feel of the this top, I’m putting it with distressed jeans. These jeans are one of my favorites and you’ve seen them many times. There’s nothing like a good fitting pair of jeans! To keep them that way I always take them off and fold them neatly. I stack all my jeans on a shelf rather than hanging them and I don’t throw them on the floor or toss over a chair.
Today, I’m also bringing back a fad from years ago…the choker. I’m looking forward to pulling out some of my old jewelry and wearing it again. Look for these everywhere this Summer. My earrings were a find at ABC Carpet and Home on a trip to NYC and while I normally don’t wear orange and black—too Halloween for me—I thought they added the right pop of color and interest. A vintage bag and fun boots finish the look today!
Tonight is a big deal for a good friend of mine, she is opening her own art gallery! I am so excited for her to start this new journey…if you are in Lancaster, check out Loryn Spangler-Jones. Her new location is 110 W. King St. Enjoy…
I began working last year to improve my leadership skills. I have a coach who is helping me and it has been an amazing journey! By focusing positive energy I’m finding I can work from a whole different level. I find it really interesting to observe how much positive energy can move you and everyone around you forward and what a drag negative energy can be. Moving the present forward…not living in the past. I spent some time yesterday on our deck in peace and quiet reflecting on the joy in my life and how I wanted to move those memories forward as we hit 2016. I think it’s going to be a great year!
We’ve celebrated the end of the year with friends over the past couple of days and here is a glimpse at the outfits carrying Rob and I forward!
The night before New Year’s Eve…celebrating a good friend’s birthday.
New Year’s Eve White Jacket: Cupcake Boutique [had it for years!]; T-Shirt: Kelly Wearstler; Faux Leather Leggings: Taupe; Earrings and Bird Ring: Space; Shoes: Prada [not available any longer, but some cool options here]; Clutch: Clare V. On Rob: White Leather Jacket: was his brothers, find similar here; Jeans: Hudson; Boots: Aldo.
I’m not a huge shorts person…I struggle with how they look on me. I like styles that hit at my knee. I feel like they’re not really a short and they aren’t jeans either! But, I don’t want them to look matronly. This second-hand find from a consignment store are my favorites! I’m not sure what I will do when they completely wear out. Right now they are at the perfect stage of “broken in” and are soft and comfortable.
I’ve been slowing playing with adding heels back into my wardrobe, although on a much more restrained basis than in my past. I think pairing a cool pair of summer heels to this outfit really makes it stand out. I could easily throw on a black boyfriend jacket or a long cardigan and wear this to work. You can’t go wrong with a comfortable graphic t-shirt either. You feel good and it adds interest.
I accessorized this look with a red leather tote which doubles as a crossbody and a favorite pair of earrings. For a work look this could be really cool with a great oversized clutch as well.
The weather forecast is hot and sunny…perfect if you ask me! A short drive outside of Lancaster is the Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show this weekend (Mio Studio will be there!). It’s a beautiful setting and wonderful selection of art. Get out and enjoy!
So, building on my post from last Friday, I’m continuing the white trend this week. Only, I not showing what I’m wearing today. I wanted to give a shout out to an event happening this coming Wednesday (June 17) called Fete en Blanc Lancaster. It’s a community celebration and ushering in Summer. This year marks the 4th year…I’ve been to all of them and they just keep growing and getting more fabulous!
The concept is you wear white, bring tables and chairs; food and drinks to a designated location in Lancaster at 6 pm. You must be invited to attend and attendance is limited…each year the competition gets heated to get a coveted spot at the event. It is email invite only and it seems you have literally minutes to reply! I don’t know where the event will be this year–that part of the fun. You don’t find out where the event is being held until the day before. It’s a cool night bring together friends and new friends from throughout Lancaster.
Here is my outfit for this year…nearly all of it sourced locally! I’m also adding in a pick from one of my favorite local stores as an option. Even if you’re not attending this year’s event, white is completely on-trend this year more than ever before. White on white is even bigger. So, make your own entrance into Summer and snag something white to wear out this weekend.
My Outfit Another Idea
White button up shirt: That Shuu Girl (and on sale! She has plenty of other options too)
Ivory Bra: Free People (slightly peeking out but something pretty to look at!)
J Brand distressed jeans: Taupe (plenty of other options too if you need them)
Clutches: vintage…try Hinesite or Mommalicious locally
Earrings: Mio Studio or Old Navy (ivory hoops) this will be a game-day decision
Shoes: Reed Krakoff. And, yes I know they are not white, but comeon…they are perfect with the outfit and close enough to pass!!
Pearl Bracelet: vintage…try Hinesite for something similar
Ring: from a trip to Paris so only seems fitting since that’s where this event idea originated. But check out this and this as an alternative
White sleeveless dress: Sophie Stargazer. Check out the back! This would be great for this event and all Summer long
Swell bottles: Sophie Stargazer. These can keep your beverages cold on the way to the event without the worry of breaking a glass bottle. Check out the cool pen that you can write on the bottles with…want to change the message, just erase and start over.
**Sophie Stargazer also has limited white linens and other accessories if you still need them to finish out your table!
Hope to see you around the city this weekend and maybe on Wednesday night. Another great event happening this weekend is PRiMA Theatre’s Summer Soiree (tickets still available). Enjoy the warm weather!
Today is going to be a flurry of activity ending with a family get-together at our place…yes, I am cooking. At least pieces of it! So, I pulled something together that would be flexible and carry me throughout the day. A quick switch at night to a skirt and I’m ready to go.
This weekend is the official start to Summer so I’m kicking it off with an on-trend pair of cropped jeans. They work really well with low heels or with higher heels for a night out and I’m loving these sporty ankle socks. I just think they are fun addition to the outfit. My trusty black jacket steps up the t-shirt but will also keep me comfortable when going in and out of air conditioning. As the day gets warmer, I can toss that aside. A day clutch adds some polish. I kept my jewelry pretty simple but could add more statement pieces if I wanted to take it to a “night” look.
As the saying goes, life is all about choices. Today is one of those days for me. My inner fashion voice says to wear the cool heels because they totally make the outfit. They add another color, some spring style and I look taller. But, right now they hurt my back so I’m opting for the cool silvery lower heels. Don’t get me wrong the lower heels are great shoes and I love them, but they are not the same!
I’m attending an all day seminar which I’m very excited about—it’s on leadership. It promises to be great professional development and offer networking opportunities. But, you never know what seminar conditions are going to be like, so I’m trying to be prepared…especially for air conditioning. To stay comfortable but still edgy I’m wearing my distressed black jeans. These will also keep my legs warm. I paired them with one of my favorite t-shirts. It’s comfortable and stylish. Pulling it all together is my gray striped seersucker jacket. Not only will this fight off the air conditioning but it helps give the overall look a professional appearance. I added a neutral day clutch for something different and big geometric earrings.
Have a great weekend, Happy Mother’s Day and get outside…enjoy!
My talented friends at Mio Studio will be at booth #139 at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, Rittenhouse Square Show this Friday-Sunday. Check them out if you’re looking for something to do this weekend.
A hot trend this season is the boho look…easy, breezy, comfortable and casual. I didn’t think this would really be a look I would embrace but then I tried on this blouse. I just loved how comfortable it was and the way it draped. I immediately started running through outfit opportunities in my head. Generally I do that when I’m thinking of buying something, especially a trend piece. I want to make sure in my head I have a few options so I get use out of it.
Today I’m pairing it with a pair of torn jeans because it’s still cold to me! But, as we get into summer this is going to be perfect with either a pair of cut-off shorts or a simple mini skirt. Boots, booties or cool sandals will all work. These boots are perfect! I love their look and even though they have a heel, it’s not too high and it’s thick so they are really comfortable. The gold tips really sold me on them though–love something unexpected like that on a shoe. For my jewelry, I layered a brass bangle I’ve had for years with a leather and metal cuff I got form a dear friend for my birthday this year. The earrings are cascading gold bars.
As you know, after shoes, I’m all about the bag. This fringe black leather bag is beautiful. And, it finishes off this outfit perfectly. It can be used as a crossbody during the day and then tuck the strap in for a clutch by night.
This week has been about hosting events for Rob and I. Tonight, we are hosting the Executive Orientation Series class graduation. We were part of the class of 2009 and this is an organization we are both proud to help support. Leadership Lancaster offers two course opportunities…check them out!
This weekend is Art Walk in Lancaster. It’s supposed to be a nice weekend so why not get outside and enjoy some art while you’re at it. Enjoy!
Denim trends are all over the place this season…so many choices! While in Miami, I picked up this pair of frayed jeans. They scream to be worn with a great pair of shoes to show off the ragged edges. I love the shorter length because they will work with flats or heels. And, they are the softest denim.
For an easy day I paired them with a dark floral blouse and simple jewelry. A complimentary colored clutch finishes the look and can carry it to night if I want.
