Friday nights are generally our date night. It’s a great way to end the week and reconnect. Or, some times it’s a great way to let loose! Whatever I wear during the day is off limits for the night out. I want to dress up and look special.
I’m not typically a ruffle kind of person but I surprised myself with this dress and like it. It’s kinda fun and flirty. A perfect date night dress! In the summer this dress will be so easy and comfortable to wear. I think it’s also going to be a good “travel dress” because it does not seem to wrinkle. For now, I’ll pair it with OTK boots and my leather jacket. Booties or flats would be perfect for summer.
When I was in high school, from what I remember, blue was my favorite color…for those who know me now you would never believe it. I fully admit 80% (at least) of my closet is black. It has been that way for a long time and I find it makes pulling together an outfit really easy! This year, I’ve added a touch of my old favorite back into the mix. When you mix black and blue together you can get navy so it only makes sense that navy pairs perfectly with black. I think adding black to navy gives it more of an edge and less of a corporate feel.
Here I added a long black duster…I can not get enough of this style of sweater. It’s so dramatic because it goes to the floor. And, it flows with you as you walk. Or, in my case, every now and then it trips me. Yes, true story. It makes me laugh every time thinking of how I look walking down the street and tripping myself! These blue suede OTK boots kept the overall look a little brighter than black boots would have. I am in air conditioning all day so no, they are not too warm in the summer! A neutral choker and simple, round silver earrings finish off the look.
Part of any good outfit is your skin. I’ve always been pretty good about taking care of mine, but I’m finding as I get older I have to change my skincare routine more often. And, even in summer I need a good moisturizer. Thankfully I have a friend who blends lotions for me! This body cream is amazing..it is rich without being messy. The good news is you can get blends she makes for Festoon. They are wonderful. I’ve also been using essential oils from time to time to relieve stress or make a room smell good. I recently was introduced to wild orange as a “wake up” in the morning…rub a little in your palms and take a nice deep breath. You will be ready to face your day minus the caffeine!
So the countdown is on! We leave for vacation on Tuesday.
It often surprises people that I travel with only a carry-on. Yep, that’s right…it all goes overhead or it doesn’t go with me. What’s the secret? Layers; neutrals; multi-tasking items and compression sacks.
For my skincare and make-up…samples or travel sizes are key. You can easily find these in most department stores or online. I’ve SaveMart (locally) to be great for the essentials like deodorant; tissues; toothpaste etc (although stock away the sample toothpastes and floss your dentist gives you and then you’re all set with no expense!) I pour my lotions, serum and foundation into smaller travel size jars so I don’t have to carry a full bottle. I’ve been trying to streamline my make-up routine anyway so this trip helped be fine-tune even more. I’ve landed on a flexible eye shadow pack from MAC that is perfect. It’s thin case travels well and the shadows can be used wet or dry so you can get day and night looks from the same mix. I consolidated my blush and bronzer into one product that provides contouring and color…again, from MAC. I’m loving the small, thin case and how nice it applies. I have a duplicate set of brushes and sponges I can only for travel. this way I know I’m not forgetting something. This roll bag holds everything I need perfectly and slips easily into a side pocket in my carry-on.
Clothing…really, one bag you ask. Yes. As you see here the key is neutrals: grey, black and taupe. And, for fun this time I’m adding a navy dress which works with black for a sophisticated touch. A few graphic tees, black and denim jeans and a gold and silver jewelry. I take a large tote as my “personal bag” on the plane—it fits magazines; my iPad; phone; passport and any other essentials I need to have at hand while flying. In my carry-on I throw 1-2 clutches/crossbodys for added interest with my outfits. Since it’s still a little cool, I’ll be taking my black trench coat—classic and goes with everything. My handy scarf that doubles as a leg warmer on the plane and two pairs of black boots will round out my wardrobe. All the clothing slips into a large compression sack, suck out the air and lay it in. Keeps everything protected from random spills and saves a ton of space. I carry one extra compression sack for all the things I buy while traveling too. Done!
I’m starting to prepare for a trip so that calls for multi-purpose outfits. I don’t check a bag…carry-on only! While that makes traveling easier, it makes packing more challenging. So, how do you make that work and still have room for all the cool clothes and shoes you’re going to buy while away?! For me it means layering pieces and neutral colors. I like to take pieces that pack small and flat and can work multiple ways.
This dress is perfect for traveling. It’s ruching style covers up wrinkles making it really easy to travel. The fabric is super soft and drapes perfectly. It can go dressy for a night out or toss on a sweater and it’s ready for a full day of roaming through museums. Believe it or not I tend to take no more than 3 pairs of shoes…the boots here are constantly on rotation all year-long; a pair of booties and maybe a pair of heels. It all depends on where we are going. For this trip I’ll probably take boots only…I suspect some cool shoes may be purchased along the way so I need room! I also keep my jewelry really simple. Typically I take 1-2 pairs of silver earrings (one for day and one for night) and 1 pair of gold; 2 cocktail rings and 1-2 scarves. I always take a large scarf on the plane to wrap around me or put over my legs…even in the Summer I have one with me!
I can’t believe it’s Friday already! This week went so fast…had two great meetings about the upcoming Wandering Warehouse event on May 7 at our place. Keep an eye out for more information and an invite. This year is going to be bigger and better to help mark MFE’s 10 year anniversary.
So coming off a crazy week and heading into the weekend I decided it had to be easy today. I’m bracing for the cold and layering…this dress is an old stand-by in my wardrobe. It’s simple, travels well (I swear it never needs to be ironed!) and has a great open back. I’m tossing it over off-black skinny jeans today instead of bare legs for added warmth. These suede booties are ridiculously comfortable and add some subtle color. I paired vintage jewelry finds and a handmade pair of chandelier earrings I got on vacation years ago to finish it out. This vintage clutch bag was a score from Hinesite (man, I miss that store!) and will easily help take the outfit from day to night. I’ll probably toss on a funky scarf tonight and wear this out too.
I love dresses! Even in the winter months I still love to wear dresses. Simple, slip on styles are my favorite. This dress is the softest suede and has a really cool retro feel. I pulled a simple black t-shirt under it for some more warmth. A cropped sweater would work too but I didn’t want to take away from the overall look. As the weather gets a little warmer I can switch to a short sleeve t-shirt and even nothing under it as we get closer to summer. Don’t you love it when a piece can take you thru several seasons?!
These OTK boots are perfect and are one of my favorite pairs. Mio Studio earrings complete the look.
Today I’m mixing it up with stripes and a faux fur vest…loving the contrast between “traditional” and funky! These are pieces I’ve had in my wardrobe for years but they still work. A stripe slouchy turtleneck will never steer you wrong–look for different color combinations to update the look. I saw a perfect light gray furry type sweater vest at Festoon this past weekend…it would give you a similar look but a longer line which would be very flattering. They only had one that I saw so get there quick!
I still love my distressed jeans. These are faded, distressed and above the ankle–tripe score! These types of jean are perfect for highlighting a great pair of shoes or boots. The ones I have on today are olive suede and are so comfortable. I wish I could spring for another pair in black because I don’t think this style will ever go out so they would be a good investment piece.
I added my favorite Mio Studio earrings–these are a classic and I truly love them! Paired up with a green crossbody saddlebag this outfit is ready to get me through work but would also be a great weekend day look for running errands.
It’s going to be a wonderfully warm weekend in Lancaster so I hope to see you out and about…I will be running around trying to snatch up some great finds for my family this holiday season. I am so behind! Enjoy
I had the fun opportunity to dress up and try on new fashions at Taupe the other day. This new European line they are carrying is well made, simple and stylish.
This black dress is incredibly comfortable. It didn’t look like much on the hanger but it is stunning…the pictures don’t do it justice. The sleeves make it appear like a cape and give the dress a beautiful drape. I paired it with flat boots but it will look best with heels I think.
Typically I’m not one for an all over print, but I have to admit this romper was a fun look! If you’re planning a holiday get away somewhere warm it would be perfect. And it has pockets!
This sheer black blouse is so beautiful. It is asymmetrical and has a bat-wing style sleeve on one side. It screams for skinny jeans and a really beautiful bra! I would wear this during the day with a tank under it but with a bra only for a hot date night.
This outfit was the wild card for me…it is not something I would ever have thought to try on. But, I loved it! It’s actually two pieces and can look completely different depending on how you fold the sleeves or cape piece. It is lined with a light grey fabric that can show when folded or when walking. I put it with tights here although I think it would look just as good with a skinny pair of jeans.
Wearing glasses is like adding any other accessory. Yes, that’s how I view them…they can add so much to an outfit. Glasses can change the entire look of your face. Over the years I’ve varied my frames from all colors and sizes. Styles that range from conservative to retro to bold statement. When I passed by the store with the main pair I wear now in the window I had to go in and try them…they were completely different from anything I had ever worn. I put them on and that was it!
I am now hooked on large round frames. And, they are not easy to find! I’m on the hunt for a new frame to give me options. I was really excited to have a local place find me two fantastic options. They both look great but I already have my favorite!
Ferragamo and Valentino Frames: Albright Opticians (the Ferragamo frames are my favorite–love the animal print on the inside)
I’m learning to embrace the color green. It’s never been one of my favorites but when I wear it, I get compliments. Because I always love the symbolism of colors, I had to look this one up: vitality, fresh growth, and wealth. It’s generally thought of as balanced, healthy, and youthful. And, green is used in design for spaces to foster creativity and productivity. It’s also a color you will see a lot of in various shades this Fall. Colors vary from emerald to military green to olive.
I’m adding a little green to my black dress and mixing up the shades. My earrings are dark olive green cut glass with gold accents. I think gold works particularly well with green. Oh, and I really try not to do the “Christmas look” with red and green (except for the hair!). this dress is fantastic…easy, flowy and will be a staple in my winter wardrobe because I can layer it under a sweater or jacket. The boots are so comfortable and in a mossy dark green. I would love to get these boots in black as well because they are so versatile and comfortable. Enough heel to make you feel like you’re wearing one but not too much to kill your feet. A perfect mix! Topping off the outfit is this green saddle bag…hot trend for the Fall. It’s stylish and fits everything you need for daily use. The bonus is a cross body strap.
